From a microscopic perspective, Chlorella pyrenoidosa looks like tiny, round emerald pearls with a diameter of only 3–8 micrometers, roughly one-tenth the width of a human hair. This microscopic organism invisible to the naked eye has inhabited Earth for 2.5 billion years. Back in prehistoric times before dinosaurs existed and when land remained barren, Chlorella pyrenoidosa carried out photosynthesis in primordial oceans, continuously altering the composition of Earth’s atmosphere. Statistics indicate microalgae produce around 50% of the world’s oxygen, meaning humans inhale oxygen from these green microorganisms with every second breath. Microalgae are therefore rightly known as the true “lungs of the Earth”, and Chlorella pyrenoidosa stands out as a commercially valuable star species within the microalgae family.
Chlorella Holds Boundless Potential with Extraordinary Nutritional Value
The health industry’s growing interest in Chlorella pyrenoidosa mainly stems from its exceptional nutritional makeup, making it a rare complete-nutrition food raw material found in nature.
Nutritional test results show Chlorella pyrenoidosa contains 50–60% protein by weight, far surpassing beef (approximately 20%) and soybean (around 35%). In May 2026, the National Health Commission issued Announcement No. 5 of 2026. Based on advances in taxonomic research and actual industrial development, this announcement revises the Latin name, species definition, production processes and quality indicators for Chlorella pyrenoidosa, while repealing the old 2012 announcement. The application for this update was submitted by Zhuhai YuYu Bio-Technology Co., Ltd., marking new breakthroughs in scientific research and manufacturing capacity for China’s microalgae industry.
Key revisions between the old and new announcements include: raising the recommended maximum daily intake from ≤10 grams to ≤20 grams; confirming the official Latin name Chlorella pyrenoidosa to eliminate synonym confusion with common chlorella and heterotrophic Chlorella pyrenoidosa; specifying protein content at 35.0–50.0 g/100g and clear quality limits for moisture, ash and other indicators; and defining its scope of use, excluding infant foods.
The announcement clarifies that Chlorella pyrenoidosa is a unicellular freshwater microalga belonging to the phylum Chlorophyta, family Chlorellaceae and genus Chlorella. It naturally occurs in multiple regions of China including Liaoning, Hebei, Jiangsu and Fujian. It is an officially approved, scalable and compliant novel microalgae food raw material. The implementation of the new announcement unifies industry standards, removes barriers to industrial application, and provides authoritative regulatory basis for food enterprises to develop formulations and innovate products.
China’s approved novel algae food ingredient catalogue covers a wide range of microalgae varieties. Different algae have distinct nutritional focuses shaped by their growing environments: Spirulina features high protein content; Dunaliella salina is rich in natural beta-carotene; Haematococcus pluvialis is famous for astaxanthin; DHA algae oil supplies Omega3 resources. With its combination of premium plant protein, chlorophyll, various vitamins and minerals, Chlorella pyrenoidosa gains differentiated competitive advantages through its comprehensive nutritional properties.
Two Core Processes: Cell Wall Disruption and Deodorization Resolve Microalgae Industrialization Challenges
Despite its rich nutrition, large-scale application of Chlorella pyrenoidosa was long restricted by two major technical bottlenecks: cell wall disruption and algal odor removal.
The dense and rigid cell wall of chlorella consists of cellulose and sporopollenin, which human digestive fluids struggle to break down. Undisrupted chlorella achieves only 30% nutrient bioavailability, while cell wall disruption lifts absorption efficiency above 80%.
Mainstream food-grade processing adopts low-temperature bead milling and compound enzymatic hydrolysis, achieving a cell disruption rate of over 95%. Acid-alkali disruption is mostly used for feed raw materials, as it easily damages active nutritional components and is rarely adopted in food production.
Besides low nutrient absorption, natural algal odor is another obstacle limiting consumer acceptance. Chlorella has a characteristic algal scent that cannot be simply masked by artificial flavors. Odor-causing substances are volatile aldehydes, and lipid oxidation after cell disruption worsens the odor.

Application scenarios for microalgae keep expanding: phycocyanin serves as a natural blue colorant in yogurt and ice cream; high-protein microalgae powder is added to meal replacements, plant-based meat and energy bars to fill gaps in plant protein supply; DHA algae oil and astaxanthin are already mass-produced for modified milk powder and antioxidant health foods. Chlorella pyrenoidosa can be formulated into diverse products such as solid beverages, pressed candies and regular dietary foods, unlocking broad market potential.
The 2026 revised announcement raises the daily intake cap of Chlorella pyrenoidosa to 20 grams, further expanding its application scope. Boasting high plant protein content, a full spectrum of amino acids, vitamins and minerals, it holds competitiveness in both alternative protein and functional food markets.
With growing policy support, rising downstream market demand and continuous optimization of core production technologies including cell disruption and deodorization, Chlorella pyrenoidosa is expected to change public stereotypes of microalgae raw materials. Evolving from a niche ingredient into an important player in the alternative protein sector, it will advance China’s microalgae nutrition industry toward high-quality development.
