Fisetin: A Highly Promising Natural Flavonoid Ingredient for Anti-Aging Research

 As public attention to anti-aging health ingredients continues to surge, fisetin (also called fustetin), a natural dietary flavonoid, has come into the sight of scientific research and industrial sectors. Widely found in common fruits and vegetables, it has emerged as a much-studied candidate in anti-aging research owing to its diverse biological potentials including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Classified as a subgroup of flavonols, fisetin is abundant in strawberries, apples and persimmons. It can also be detected in grapes, mangoes, green onions, cucumbers and other produce. The average daily dietary intake of fisetin for ordinary people is merely around 0.4 milligrams, far below the effective dosage adopted in scientific trials. Tracing back its research history, scientists first isolated this substance from the Venetian sumac in 1833. Over the following decades, chemists gradually clarified its chemical properties and molecular structure, and explored its artificial synthesis, laying a solid foundation for subsequent pharmacological studies.

Current in vitro and animal studies have verified the diverse biological activities of fisetin. In terms of cellular senescence, it modulates the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway to eliminate senescent cells and cut down pro-inflammatory factors secreted by these aged cells. Meanwhile, it regulates the mTOR, AMPK and SIRT1 pathways to activate autophagy, clear damaged organelles and preserve cellular homeostasis. Furthermore, it safeguards mitochondria, alleviates oxidative stress damage and optimizes mitochondrial energy metabolism.

Beyond cellular anti-aging effects, research into fisetin is being carried out across multiple fields. For skincare applications, fisetin scavenges free radicals, inhibits tyrosinase activity and relieves skin inflammation, exhibiting potential benefits for repairing and maintaining the skin barrier. Neuroscience studies indicate it can cross the blood-brain barrier; via its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms, it protects nerve cells, with trials underway to explore its efficacy in improving cognition and memory. Additional research covers hair loss intervention, inflammatory injury repair, oncology pharmacology and cardiovascular protection. It should be emphasized that the vast majority of these findings are derived from cell cultures and animal models, with large-scale human clinical evidence still insufficient.

In terms of global regulatory status: Canada categorizes fisetin as a natural health product. However, it has not been officially approved as a novel food ingredient in China, the United States, the European Union and other regions, hence it is not permitted for direct use in conventional food manufacturing for the time being, mostly remaining in the research phase for dietary supplements and raw material development.

Looking ahead to industrial prospects, fisetin is envisioned for application across dietary supplements, cosmetics, innovative pharmaceuticals and functional foods. Finished dietary supplement products containing fisetin are already available overseas. The cosmetics industry values its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and is developing skincare formulas incorporating it. In pharmaceutical research, teams are exploring its potential for developing drugs targeting neurodegenerative diseases, tumors and other ailments. With continuous upgrades in extraction and synthesis technologies, once sufficient human clinical data is accumulated and regulatory filings are completed worldwide, fisetin is expected to become a mainstream ingredient in the big health industry.

Industry experts warn that fisetin is merely a research raw material and cannot replace medicines to treat diseases. Consumers should refrain from blindly purchasing related supplement products, view existing research outcomes rationally, and distinguish between laboratory conclusions and actual physiological effects on the human body.
